If you've never cooked with fonio before, this is the recipe that's going to change that. It's warm, creamy, naturally gluten-free, and comes together faster than you can brew your morning coffee. One bowl of this and you'll wonder where fonio has been all your life.

What is Fonio?

Fonio (also known as "Acha" in Nigeria) is an ancient African grain from West Africa that has been nourishing people for over 5000 years, and honestly, it deserves way more attention than it gets. It's naturally gluten-free, rich in protein, iron, and magnesium, and has a deliciously light, slightly nutty flavor. Think of it as the grain that does it all.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • ¼ cup fonio grain
  • ¼ cup milk of choice - or swap with our Tigernut Powder Mix 
  • 1 tbsp Date Powder,  maple syrup or sweetener of choice
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter (optional, for a richer, creamier bowl)
  • 1 tsp Date Choco (optional, for a natural chocolatey twist)

How to Make It - 4 Easy Steps (Instructions)

Step 1 - Boil your water: Pour 2 cups of water into a pot and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat.

Step 2 - Add the fonio: Stir in ¼ cup of fonio grain and reduce the heat to medium.

Step 3 - Cook until creamy: Let the fonio cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Watch it transform into a soft, creamy porridge right before your eyes. That's it - your fonio cereal is ready!

Step 4 - Dress it up and serve: Stir in your milk of choice (or Tigernut Powder Mix ), sweeten to taste, and add your topping. Drop in a spoonful of peanut butter for richness, or stir in some Date Choco for a naturally indulgent chocolatey finish.

How to Make It - Microwave Method

Step 1 - Add your Fonio into a deep bowl and pour in 2 cups of water. You need a deep bowl to ensure it doesn't bowl over

Step 2 - Set timer to 5 minutes & cook while leaving the bowl open. It should be fully cooked after 5 minutes, then repeat step 4 above. Enjoy!!

Tips & Variations
